Omolara R. Alao, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A
Dr. Omolara Alao, a board-certified internal medicine and infectious diseases specialist, currently serves as a lead medical officer at a regulatory agency in the United States. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Connecticut College in Connecticut, USA, and a MD/MPH degree with a focus on international health from New York Medical College in Valhalla, USA. Additionally, she holds an MBA with a focus in healthcare management from Western Governors University in Utah, USA.
Dr. Alao’s medical journey began with her active-duty service in the United States Army. During this time, she completed her internal medicine residency at the Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Georgia, USA, and her infectious diseases fellowship at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, USA. After leaving active duty, she worked as a quarantine medical officer for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the John F. Kennedy International airport during the Ebola pandemic.
Following her Ebola experience, Dr. Alao transitioned to a regulatory agency that reviews drug applications. She then moved on to reviewing vaccines before they are marketed and is currently in a clinical team lead role in the review of nonprescription drugs. Since leaving active-duty US military service, Dr. Alao has continued to practice clinical medicine as a hospitalist at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Her research interests include malaria, Ebola, HIV, and the impact of gender inequality in developing countries on communicable diseases like HIV.
